Plan for 27 October, 2009:

1. A short introduction to word lists

- General Service List – most frequent 2,000 or so words in English – can be found here
- Academic Word List – words, divided into 10 sublists, that appear in a broad range of academic texts – can be found here

An online tool for text analysis – showing which words belong to which of these lists – can be found here.

Below you can find a sample picture of the results this application gives you:

VocabProfiler

Legend:
- blue words – among the most frequent 1000 words in English
- green words – among the most frequent 2000 words in English
- yellow words – AWL
- red words – terminology, proper names, etc.

Follow these links and work on online AWL exercises. You’ll be given approximately 30 minutes of time. After this time each of you will report on the usefulness of these exercises and point out 3 words that he/she finds useful or interesting.

The relevant handout can be found here: Summarizing – 27.10.2009

Keys to exercises in this handout:

ETC

1. How it works?
ETC is quite widespread, which is why it is important to understand how it works. First, an antenna is used to automatically identify the vehicles; it sends out a RF which bounces back from a transponder (or tag), located inside of the car. A second antenna picks up transponder data, and then encrypted data is sent to a central location where the toll is charged. One limitation of this system is that the speed of the cars is limited.

2. What are the benefits of ETC?

In the past tolls were collected by people, which caused frequent traffic jams. Today ETC brings a lot of benefits. Among the most important ones are that drivers do not have to stop, their trips are faster, throughput at toll plazas can be increased, traffic congestion is minimized, operation costs (fewer staff and toll booths) are lowered, there is a positive impact on the environment. Importantly, there always needs to be a second option, which is to pay with cash. Other benefits are drivers can pay the toll without slowing down, ETC reduces environmentally harmful emissions, is convenient, enables fuel savings, centralizes user accounts, and enables more efficient identification of toll violators.

3. What are the drawbacks of ETC?

However, ETC is also has drawbacks. The two most important ones are layoffs of employees and the possibility of new tolls.

4. What does the future of ETC hold?

In the future GPS-based ETC will be even more efficient.

!! IMPORTANT NOTICE !!
